Chapter 13

The next afternoon, Riley was laying in his bunk reading, when a voice came over the intercom, “ROOF!” Immediately, the entire mod started chanting, “Roof! Roof! Roof!” It sounded like a room full of monkeys, all gone insane.

“What’s happening?” Riley asked Frank as he sat up in his bunk.

“It’s time to go to the roof,” Frank said. “They’re letting us go outside.”

“What’s out there?” Riley asked.

“There’s a basketball hoop and a handball wall. They also have a pair of fingernail clippers. I don’t go. It isn’t worth my time. But you might want to go. It’s a chance to see the sky. For me, I fucking hate looking out at the city and seeing everything that I’m missing.”

“Hmm,” Riley said. “I think I’ll go. I’ve never been to the roof before.”

When the cell gates popped open, Riley joined the flood of inmates lining up to go to the roof. They streamed out through the mod’s gate, where they were lined up against the wall in the hallway outside the cafeteria. Guards positioned themselves in a line facing the inmates, stretching up and down the hallway.

“Take off your pants!” yelled a guard. Riley was surprised by this request, but everyone else in line took off their pants, so Riley did too. The guards had them hold their pants by the legs and shake them out, then lay them down on the ground by their feet. Next, they removed their smocks and shook them out. They did the same thing for their T-shirts and their socks. They took their slippers and folded them in half, then clapped them together. Finally, the inmates ran their fingers around the inside of the waistband of their boxers, then squatted down and coughed. When they were done, the guards told them to put on their pants, T-shirts, and smocks, then marched them down the hallway, and up a series of escalators.

Riley was surprised to find out that the “roof” was literally the roof. There was a fence all-round the edges and over the top, so that if formed a cage over the entire roof. The roof was split into two sections. There was an upper section, where there were some tables, and a lower section where there was a tennis court with no net, a half of a basketball court, and a concrete wall. A door near the west side of the roof opened up and a guard tossed out a soccer ball, a basketball and a racquetball. Within seconds, an impromptu soccer game had erupted among about two dozen inmates. They distinguished the teams with half of the inmates naked from the waist up, the other half in white T-shirts. Riley looked around and saw a line of guys leaning against the rail on the upper level, waiting in line to use a single pair of fingernail clippers. Riley went and got in line. It had been more than a couple of weeks since he’d cut his nails. They were longer now than they’d ever been in his life, and it made him feel disgusting.
